Week 3: Assignment 4

Students will read along and have a brief discussion about the book “All the Lovely Bad Ones” by Mary Dowling Hahn. After the informal discussion, students will work on a Halloween timeline to write about their favorite past costumes and how they’ve celebrated in the past. On the second day of discussion, students will reread independently and dissect the book as a class (ie. Setting, plot, main characters) and summarize the story. Story Map

Week 3: Assignment 2

Which ideas from the video reflect what the ELA teachers you interviewed are currently doing to integrate technology with their literacy instruction?  During my recent observation, I took the time to scan the room to see what type of material students have access to and what type of environment is promoted for a healthy learning. One of the key initiatives in the classroom is the act of kindness and being a model student. Each day, students are asked to complete a do now for the moment or day in which they write, communicate or physically do one act of kindness. This mantra is similar to the global literacy, also known as global awareness.      New literacies provide a fun and engaging alternative to learning with the ever changing technology driven world. With the incorporation of technology, student engagement increased significantly and teachers are able to provide extensive feedback and monitor student's educational growth. According to the New Literacies and 21st Century Technologies Position Statement , "New literacies are central to civic economic and personal participation in a global community". Essentially, in order to continue shaping the future, it is vital to introduce technology to allow students to be creative and receptive of technology. New literacies allows teachers to be challenged to find new and innovative ways to incorporate technology into lesson plans. This level of creativity will in turn spark the imagination of students and sharpen their skills. What technologies do you utilize for developing literacy amongst students? At Amber, we utilize a number of technology programs within our curriculum to promote literacy among students. A couple of the programs we utilize on a daily bases are Brain Pop in which they have game learning.
