Week 3: Assignment 4

Students will read along and have a brief discussion about the book “All the Lovely Bad Ones” by Mary Dowling Hahn.
After the informal discussion, students will work on a Halloween timeline to write about their favorite past costumes and how they’ve celebrated in the past.
On the second day of discussion, students will reread independently and dissect the book as a class (ie. Setting, plot, main characters) and summarize the story.

Book Builder

Love Your Hair! My book builder topic is on hair and diversity and it is aimed at students in kindergarten and first grade. As a future teacher, I think it is important to explore excepting people and allowing students to become comfortable with diversity at an early age. Growing up in NYC, I was exposed to so many cultures at a young age and it shaped who I am today. By introducing culture awareness at an early age, I believe that we will reduce the possibility of bullying and discrimination later on with students. I received the idea to explore this topic after having a conversation with a fellow co-worker who has a niece who is currently bullied in her class for her hair texture. After chatting with the ELA instructor ,she said it would be a great idea as students become self aware of their differences at an early age.
