Week 12: Analysis of Glogster Educational Affordances

Concept of Affordances and the Three Main Research Questions:

1.    How might the affordances of technologies be articulated?
2.    Can these be developed in a taxonomy for ICT?
3.    How might a critical knowledge and understanding of such affordances be used to support learning and teaching?

Benefits
Accessibility
      ·         Students and teachers may obtain the site through classroom and/or computers within libraries.
     ·         Students must have a tutorial as they are shifting their previous learning pattern to a new innovative approach.
Con: School must pay an annual membership, this may be a challenge for schools with limited budgets.
Speed of Change
 ·     Teachers have the ability to make updates to documents and change literature pieces.
·   With rapid changes, some students may not have a significant amount of time to reflect on lesson plans.
Con: with material become disposable and changing so often, it may present a conflict to students learning new approaches.

Diversity
·         Teachers have the ability to utilize the program for various subjects across the board.
·         The site provides teachers with templates and ideas to reference for future lesson plans.
·         ELA compositions such as book reports, biographies, and learning key reading elements such as similes, metaphors and homophones.

Communications and Collaborations
·         Students have the ability to work on group projects and presentations.
·         Students and teachers have the ability to communicate with each other via private messages and classroom boards.

Con: There wasn’t a visible area in which students messages are filtered.
Reflection
·         Students have the ability to reflect on their experiences through the discussion board area.
·         Students can utilize the templates developed as a reference tool for oral presentations.

Multi-modal and non-linear
·         Students are able to complete assignments and templates in a non-linear approach. An ideal approach for students who struggle with different components and need additional time.

Surveillance
·         Students are limited to interactions with their fellow classmates, an important feature with luring of children on the internet during this era.
