ELA instruction is broken down into 5
essential components (reading, writing, speaking, listening and language) and
taught by one instructor for K-5 grades. Reading focuses on the text complexity
and comprehension growth of a student, essentially the goal of reading is to
increase student’s comprehension of complex text. Students must showcase the
growth of connecting ideas between text and utilizing text evidence to support
their ideas. Finally, students should be able to identify inconsistencies and poor
reasoning in texts.
2. Key Features
of the Standards, Writing.
Some of the key features of
writing included the ability to plan, revise, edit and publish written material
in connection to reading assignments. Students will learn the traits of
argumentative, informative/explanatory and narrative writing. These vital
features are developed through strengthen their reading and research
skills. Students must have the ability to research topics and express
their findings.
3 3. Key Features of the Standards, Speaking and
Listening.
Speaking and listening go hand in hand and the
standard focuses on flexible communication and collaboration. Through this standard,
students will develop their communication skills for formal presentation that include
but are not limited to storytelling and podcasts. Students must work together
to express and listen to ideas by integrating information from oral, visual and
quantitative and media sources. By practicing their oral skills, students are
developing their language and writing skills as well.
4 4. Key Features of the Standards, Language.
The language standard focuses on the effective use of the
language and includes the standard for writing. The vocabulary standard teaches
students the understanding of words and phrases and the cohesive use of
acquiring new vocabulary through reading, writing and speaking and listening.
