5 Components of Edmodo
  • Polls- The poll is a function in which teachers may send to students to weigh in on their desire to implement a specific book they would prefer to read or a particular topic (historic) that they would want to learn about in a reading class, I.e. Anne Frank highlights a period of time but is a great book to read in a class.
  • Quiz- The quiz function is a great way to engage students and test their knowledge and understanding of a lesson plan they had earlier in the day. Teachers utilize this function to find the areas in which students struggle in so they may readjust their lesson plan to tackle problematic areas.
  • Folders: Teachers may utilize the folder section of the site to update students with supplemental reading and for lesson notes as a study tool.
  • Messaging: The messaging section provides students and teachers a way to communicate with each other if they have questions or require additional help while completing assignments. 
  • Student Badges- Provides teachers and students a comprehensive overview of students performance within the class and their achievement, i.e. homework help and participation.
Edmodo is a great interactive platform in which students may review past lesson assignments. ELA teachers may provide supplemental readings and allow students to take a quiz to test their knowledge on passages. In addition, teachers may use Edmodo as a discussion board for topics discussed in the classroom to continue thought provoking conversations. Prior to beginning a lesson plan, teachers can use the poll and quiz to gain feedback from students about topics and their knowledge of material before hand to coordinate the appropriate lesson.

    I like the idea of using polls in Edmodo before the lesson. Its a great way to get feedback to help teachers create a lesson. Its also good to use after a lesson. Teachers can use it to get immediate feedback on how students viewed the lesson, what could be better, etc. Its a good way to conduct formative assessments and use exit tickets.

Book Builder

Love Your Hair! My book builder topic is on hair and diversity and it is aimed at students in kindergarten and first grade. As a future teacher, I think it is important to explore excepting people and allowing students to become comfortable with diversity at an early age. Growing up in NYC, I was exposed to so many cultures at a young age and it shaped who I am today. By introducing culture awareness at an early age, I believe that we will reduce the possibility of bullying and discrimination later on with students. I received the idea to explore this topic after having a conversation with a fellow co-worker who has a niece who is currently bullied in her class for her hair texture. After chatting with the ELA instructor ,she said it would be a great idea as students become self aware of their differences at an early age.
