1. What gaming elements provide
users the learning content and how? (Refer to the journal article page 4).
The game I chose to focus
on is Roblox, it is known as the largest social platform game in which gamers
can interact with various players and create their own game in using the propriety
engine Roblox Studio. Players are able to buy, sell virtual items, essentially
the game promotes entrepreneurship and building communities. According the
parent guide, the game promotes the constructism theory in which children learn
effectively through building.
Text:
In order to sell products, players must interact with the community
through message boards. In addition, players receive notifications of products
on leaderboards. Children must use creativity in order to advance and complete
challenges in addition to the textual information they receive to expand.
Visual-graphic elements:
Students play the game through first person perspectives and
develop unique players, by developing creative items, players receive robux
(virtual money) in which they may utilize to purchase additional skills and
materials.
Audio elements:
Players have the ability to speak directly to their opponents
and develop business relationships with players. By incorporating an audio element,
students are able to work on the oral skills. Audio elements can be turned off
and adjusted for privacy purposes.
2. What is the goal of the game?
The goal of the game is to
build a virtual community similar to SIMS, however with a bigger focus on
building creative tools and business relationships to obtain robux. The more
robux students have, the more tools they can purchase to invest in their business
and skills.
3. What are rules of playing this
game?
The basic rules of the game are
to build your own game using positive language and content. Each player can
develop special rules for their respective games i.e. do not steal a flag.
4. Does this game have any
scenario design? (Refer to the journal article page 5.) If yes, is this a
fabricated or embedded in curriculum-related content?
The scenario design used
in this game is embedded in curriculum related content. According to the article,
these games “affects players’ knowledge attainment in a particular domain”. The
more players engaged in the game, the more knowledge and skills a player
achieves.
My kids love playing roblox! I don't mind them playing it because it uses their creative skills. Plus the fact that they can enter each others "worlds" and help each other out is great.
