Week 3: Assignment 1

     New literacies provide a fun and engaging alternative to learning with the ever changing technology driven world. With the incorporation of technology, student engagement increased significantly and teachers are able to provide extensive feedback and monitor student's educational growth. According to the New Literacies and 21st Century Technologies Position Statement, "New literacies are central to civic economic and personal participation in a global community". Essentially, in order to continue shaping the future, it is vital to introduce technology to allow students to be creative and receptive of technology. New literacies allows teachers to be challenged to find new and innovative ways to incorporate technology into lesson plans. This level of creativity will in turn spark the imagination of students and sharpen their skills. In order for new literacies to play a key role, teachers must be open to continuously keeping up to date with new developments and softwares. Through staff development programs, the early introduction of technology to students enrolled in teacher education programs the development of students' education through new literacies would not be an issue.

    Very well written summary! I like your point about being creative. It is so important to be able to incoproprate technology in different ways in order to keep up to date with what is going on.

Book Builder

Love Your Hair! My book builder topic is on hair and diversity and it is aimed at students in kindergarten and first grade. As a future teacher, I think it is important to explore excepting people and allowing students to become comfortable with diversity at an early age. Growing up in NYC, I was exposed to so many cultures at a young age and it shaped who I am today. By introducing culture awareness at an early age, I believe that we will reduce the possibility of bullying and discrimination later on with students. I received the idea to explore this topic after having a conversation with a fellow co-worker who has a niece who is currently bullied in her class for her hair texture. After chatting with the ELA instructor ,she said it would be a great idea as students become self aware of their differences at an early age.
