Week 5: Assignment 1

According to the teacher’s manual on Gamestar Mechanic, students have the ability to strength and develop their technological, artistic, cognitive, social, and linguistic skills. By developing a game students are using their creative and critical skills to challenge players art and storytelling. Teachers may also develop games in which students may practice ELA through missions, for example, in order for students to complete an obstacle, they must answer questions about key concepts in ELA. Another way teachers may utilize the game, may be to use crucial ELA skills and terms i.e incorporate simile and metaphors and see if students can identify within the game.

I’ve witnessed teachers utilize games in which students show their understanding of key terms by using a unique code to sign in and provide their answers. Students are given 30 seconds in which they must read and submit their answer along with their classmates. A chart pops up once all students have submitted their answer to show how many students answered correctly and how many answered incorrectly. This is a great way for students to compete without isolating students who struggle in the classroom.

  1. Teacher developed games are a great way to incorporate ELA skills into a game. The students can also develop their ELA skills through the community forums in Gamestar Mechanics.

Book Builder

Love Your Hair! My book builder topic is on hair and diversity and it is aimed at students in kindergarten and first grade. As a future teacher, I think it is important to explore excepting people and allowing students to become comfortable with diversity at an early age. Growing up in NYC, I was exposed to so many cultures at a young age and it shaped who I am today. By introducing culture awareness at an early age, I believe that we will reduce the possibility of bullying and discrimination later on with students. I received the idea to explore this topic after having a conversation with a fellow co-worker who has a niece who is currently bullied in her class for her hair texture. After chatting with the ELA instructor ,she said it would be a great idea as students become self aware of their differences at an early age. By implementing this story into a lesson plan, students will practice by reading along and exploring new words by making connections to the patterns they've lea...
