According to the teacher’s manual on Gamestar Mechanic,
students have the ability to strength and develop their technological,
artistic, cognitive, social, and linguistic skills. By developing a game
students are using their creative and critical skills to challenge players art
and storytelling. Teachers may also develop games in which students may
practice ELA through missions, for example, in order for students to complete
an obstacle, they must answer questions about key concepts in ELA. Another way
teachers may utilize the game, may be to use crucial ELA skills and terms i.e
incorporate simile and metaphors and see if students can identify within the game.
I’ve witnessed teachers utilize games in which students
show their understanding of key terms by using a unique code to sign in and
provide their answers. Students are given 30 seconds in which they must read
and submit their answer along with their classmates. A chart pops up once all
students have submitted their answer to show how many students answered
correctly and how many answered incorrectly. This is a great way for students
to compete without isolating students who struggle in the classroom.
Teacher developed games are a great way to incorporate ELA skills into a game. The students can also develop their ELA skills through the community forums in Gamestar Mechanics.
