Assignment #2: Understanding Common Core for ELA and Literacy

What is your understanding of Common Core?

Common core is a set of standards that provides teachers an outline of the expectations for learning that students must achieve during the academic year. Prior to implementing the common core standards, many students who enrolled in school fell behind with curriculum and they were forced to complete remedial courses to catch up to their counterparts. Currently, common core is divided into multiple categories (reading, writing, speaking and listening). There are a broad set of standards that provided descriptive standards for each content area.  These standards collectively focus on the efforts of college readiness from K-12 (within NYC, Prek-12). After watching this video, I was shocked to realize common core wasn't a focus when I was enrolled in school, however, I recall having friends who took remedial courses in college to catch up to the expectations of course load. It is important to ensure students have an equal opportunity to achieve and to have a set of standards that we can measure achievement across the board!

  1. Common Core's implementation is a great way to "level the playing field." I had a friend in high school who moved to FL and was put in all advanced classes or bumped into the grade higher because their education system was so far behind ours in NY.

    1. Yes I agree and had the same experiences of a friend who moved to Florida and was moved ahead because of her education received in New York. Common core has its faults but I agree on how it has "leveled the playing field" as you said.

Book Builder

Love Your Hair! My book builder topic is on hair and diversity and it is aimed at students in kindergarten and first grade. As a future teacher, I think it is important to explore excepting people and allowing students to become comfortable with diversity at an early age. Growing up in NYC, I was exposed to so many cultures at a young age and it shaped who I am today. By introducing culture awareness at an early age, I believe that we will reduce the possibility of bullying and discrimination later on with students. I received the idea to explore this topic after having a conversation with a fellow co-worker who has a niece who is currently bullied in her class for her hair texture. After chatting with the ELA instructor ,she said it would be a great idea as students become self aware of their differences at an early age. By implementing this story into a lesson plan, students will practice by reading along and exploring new words by making connections to the patterns they've lea...
