Book Builder

Love Your Hair! My book builder topic is on hair and diversity and it is aimed at students in kindergarten and first grade. As a future teacher, I think it is important to explore excepting people and allowing students to become comfortable with diversity at an early age. Growing up in NYC, I was exposed to so many cultures at a young age and it shaped who I am today. By introducing culture awareness at an early age, I believe that we will reduce the possibility of bullying and discrimination later on with students. I received the idea to explore this topic after having a conversation with a fellow co-worker who has a niece who is currently bullied in her class for her hair texture. After chatting with the ELA instructor ,she said it would be a great idea as students become self aware of their differences at an early age. By implementing this story into a lesson plan, students will practice by reading along and exploring new words by making connections to the patterns they've lea...

The article “Theories and Practices of Multimodal Education: The Instructional Dynamics of Picture Books and Primary Classrooms” by Dawnene D. Hassett, and Jen Scott Curwood explores the benefits of picture books within primary classrooms and highlights key characteristics that enhances the classroom experience. According to the article “I n many children’s books today, written language is indeed no longer central”. In addition, Hasset and Curwood highlight that teachers and students must take into consideration the various forms of communication by focusing on text and illustration. From my experience, many of the books that are presented for elementary students are very heavy on graphics instead of words. This opens up for students to participate in dialogue and discuss further the meaning of the literature with the help of imagery and art. A second element that is highlighted is the usage of fonts to keep students engaged.   Students are able to determine various moods and scen...

5 Components of Edmodo Polls- The poll is a function in which teachers may send to students to weigh in on their desire to implement a specific book they would prefer to read or a particular topic (historic) that they would want to learn about in a reading class, I.e. Anne Frank highlights a period of time but is a great book to read in a class. Quiz- The quiz function is a great way to engage students and test their knowledge and understanding of a lesson plan they had earlier in the day. Teachers utilize this function to find the areas in which students struggle in so they may readjust their lesson plan to tackle problematic areas. Folders: Teachers may utilize the folder section of the site to update students with supplemental reading and for lesson notes as a study tool. Messaging: The messaging section provides students and teachers a way to communicate with each other if they have questions or require additional help while completing assignments.  Student Badges- Pro...

Middle School Science Teachers’ Confidence and Pedagogical Practice of New Literacies provides a concise overview of the use of new literacies and how teachers see the benefits of using technology but many teachers shy away from implementing technology within the classroom. According to the article, “Even though teachers are encouraged to integrate ICTs, the current teachers’ use of technology is usually limited to support their personal communication and classrooms, I’ve noticed students comment on their everyday use of technology and how it plays an intricate role in their communications with their family and friends. There are several free social media websites in which teachers can utilize to conduct fun and engaging lesson plans such as “Edmodo, eChalk, Blackboard, and Schoology. Within the classrooms I shadow, BrainPop is a popular function when we are conducting station learning. In addition, study island is a program used within the school to monitor individual performanc...
